There is one thing the photograph must contain: the humanity of the moment.

GREAT POSES

FOR PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY

Crossed arms

This is one of my go-to poses for headshots or corporate portraits because it’s simple and classic.

That said, it’s important to make sure the person feels relaxed—if they seem stiff or aren’t smiling, the pose can come across as cold. I avoid using it at the very start of a shoot, giving time to build rapport first. It works well for both men and women and with fashion models, it’s great for adding a touch of attitude.

S-shape pose

For a feminine touch, I love using the S-shape pose to highlight natural curves and add a sense of flow to the body.

It doesn’t need to be overdone—just a subtle hint of the shape works beautifully. The best part? This pose works whether she’s sitting, standing, or lying down, making it super versatile and elegant.

The 45-degree rule

The 45-degree rule is a go-to technique in portrait photography for creating flattering and dynamic compositions.

By angling the subject’s body 45 degrees from the camera and slightly turning their head to face it, the pose adds depth, slims the figure, and avoids the flatness of a straight-on shot. This subtle shift also helps the subject appear more relaxed and natural.

It’s a classic, versatile pose that works perfectly for head-and-shoulder portraits, giving a timeless and professional look.

Motion shots

One of the biggest challenges I’ve noticed when posing someone is avoiding that stiff, unnatural look. It often happens when they’re feeling nervous or if they’ve been holding the same pose for too long.

Use the surroundings

Unless I’m shooting in a studio with a plain background, I always look for ways to use the location in my portraits. Columns, floors, doorways, and stairways—anything the subject can lean on or climb—adds a unique and personal touch to the shot.

Leaning back

Want an easy yet timeless photo shoot pose? I’ve got you covered! This pose is one of my favourites because it’s so versatile.

The idea is simple: by giving the person some physical support, their body naturally relaxes, making the shot feel more natural. I enjoy customizing this pose to suit each situation and the unique personality of the person I’m photographing. For female subjects, I might suggest curving their backs slightly to accentuate their natural curves. It’s such a versatile trick, and it always delivers!
